LaVerne Boyd Owen (nee Dunn)
January 2, 1927 ~ March 1, 2020 (age 93)
LaVerne began her new life in Heaven in the early morning hours of March 1st, 2020, after a long and happy life. She was preceded in death by her wonderful husbands, Bill Boyd (2/29/1988) and Charlie Owen (2/10/2010), her parents, William and Emma Dunn, and her siblings Bonnie Wagner and Harlan Dunn. She is survived by her children Bruce (Janet) Boyd, Barbi (Jeff) Morgan, stepsons Chuck (Vicky Phares), Steve (Eve McClure) and Jim (Susan) Owen, grandchildren Jason (Emily) Morgan, Marci (Ben) Cox, Ian (Megan) Boyd, Allison (Cameron) Hulse, Nikki (Jimmy) Stokes, Kelly Owen, Carson Owen, Whitney Owen, Paul Owen, Spencer Owen, Tommy (Stephanie) Owen and Scott Owen. LaVerne was also blessed with great grandchildren Lucas and Liam Boyd, Samantha and Vivian Cox, and Callie, Brooke and Charlie Stokes, as well as numerous nephews and nieces.
Her faith in Jesus Christ was the foundation of LaVerne’s life. A longtime member of College Presbyterian Church, LaVerne was active in the choir for many years and very involved in several other church activities, most notably cross cultural missions, where she participated in mission trips to Asia and Turkey. After moving to Mason Christian Village, LaVerne joined Crestview Presbyterian and enjoyed worshiping there.
After marrying Bill Boyd in 1948, LaVerne worked as a homemaker and mother. In the mid 1960’s she went to work part time at the Equitable Life Insurance Co., and later took a fulltime position at P&G’s Hilltop facility in the Technical Recruiting department.
LaVerne shared many adventures with Bill, Bruce and Barbi on numerous vacations and weekend boating trips on the Ohio River aboard the family yacht, the “Knots O’ Plenty”. It is rumored that in a former life she was a pirate queen. She also enjoyed a wide variety of other interests: she was a very talented pianist who could play any tune by ear, a wonderful vocalist, a dancer, wonderful, a golfer, card player (especially bridge), a fantastic cook and could iron clothes like a professional. She was decidedly not fond of reptiles, however.
After Bill died, LaVerne met and married Charlie Owen, proving beyond any doubt that she had impeccable taste in men. She and Charlie travelled the world and were able to visit numerous exotic and exciting places. She discovered the joys of ocean cruising and shared the fun with her children and extended family. She never slept in a tent or went camping again, which did not bother her one bit. Charlie also introduced her to the daily gin and tonic cocktail hour and she always appreciated a little “freshening up” of her drink. The 20 years LaVerne spent with Charlie were among the happiest of her life and when he passed in 2010, some of the light went out of her life.
LaVerne will be remembered for her infectious laugh and her good heart. Her life was long and mostly full of fun and good times. She had a wonderful extended family who she dearly loved and many, many good and loving friends, many of whom she has been reunited with today. More than anything else though, LaVerne (and Bill, of course) adopted 2 infant children and gave them the happiest and best life they could have ever had.
Her Memorial Service will be held on Friday, March 6th at 11:30 AM at Crestview Presbyterian Church,9463 Cincinnati-Columbus Road, West Chester, OH 45069.
