Herbert Carl Wagner
Herbert Carl Wagner, 100, of Matlacha passed away Wednesday, November 13th at home. Herb was born June 3, 1919 in Barmen Germany to Luise Anna (Gertenbach) and Ernst Wagner. He immigrated to Cincinnati Ohio with his parents, sister Katherine, and brother Ernst in 1925.
At a young age Herb was interested in Morse code communication and became self-taught and quite adept. After high school, Herb went to Port Arthur, TX to study radio communications. He then worked on ships as a radio operator, and was commissioned with the Merchant Marines during World War II. Herb could remember hearing of the bombing of Pearl Harbor over the radio while aboard ship. He traveled many places and had wonderful stories and memories. Herb also worked air traffic control and radio dispatch for the police department of Cincinnati.
Herb built his home in Matlacha in 1970 and has lived here ever since. Herb was predeceased by his wife Helen Margaret Dunn.
Herb will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by Mary Bishop, Kathleen McCarthy, Korynna Gacad, Sharon Hurley and Amy McLean along with her granddaughter Ava. Herb was a gentleman and a good man. We were blessed to know him.
